Belated Secret Voter ballots from Gold Derby: www.goldderby.com/article/2019/secret-oscar-voter-ballot-exposed-vice-glenn-close-regina-king/www.goldderby.com/article/2019/secret-oscar-voter-ballot-exposed-roma-best-picture-rami-malek-mahershala-ali/www.goldderby.com/article/2019/secret-oscar-voter-ballot-exposed-blackkklansman-christian-bale-glenn-close/www.goldderby.com/article/2019/secret-oscar-voter-ballot-exposed-roma-bradley-cooper-mahershala-ali/www.goldderby.com/article/2019/secret-oscar-voter-ballot-exposed-black-panther-yalitza-aparicio-christian-bale/Voter #1 for Vice "I loved its style and how in-your-face it was. Clearly I agree with the politics of the movie. And as I look back on those films 10 years from now, that is the film that will best represent this time and where we are in this moment. It will have a long life because of that. Second place is “The Favourite.” Third place is “Green Book.” McKay "I’m going with Adam McKay, although there are really good reasons to vote for every single person in that category as well. They’re totally different movies from Yorgos, Spike and everybody in styles and approaching their subject matters. It boils down for me as to which movie resonated the most." Bale: "Such a tough category because they are all fantastic. For me, it comes down to Christian Bale or Rami Malek almost tied. For Christian, he delivers a performance through his eyes and transformed the way he walked. He didn’t ever remind me he was Christian Bale for even one second, and he’s the way in. I was riveted. Rami carried his movie and you missed him in those seconds he was not on screen. When they would show me something else, I just wanted to get back to him. He perfectly captured Freddie Mercury." Voter #2 mentions Bale while choosing Rami: "I was kind of ambivalent on this category but finally settled on Rami Malek. It was between him and Christian Bale. I really thought he carried that movie almost by himself. Christian’s performance was great but what I call an interpretation or imitation of the character and not creating it. But I said the same thing last year to people about Churchill and Gary Oldman, so I was wrong last year." Voter #3 for Bale "My choice is Christian Bale because if you did not see the credits you wouldn’t know it was him as Dick Cheney. It was an incredibly convincing performance. Rami Malek was great as Freddie Mercury, but he didn’t blow me away as much." Voter #4 for Amy Adams "BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Amy Adams (“Vice”) I’m going for a long shot there but a personal favorite in Amy Adams because she is just so good. Even though she had limited screen time, she established how much of a force behind the man that she was." Voter #5 for Bale; "It’s interesting, because for me Christian Bale is my selection. He transformed beautifully and I kept forgetting it was him. I don’t usually forget who I’m watching. He’s got my vote hands down."

Wowe. So glad I bothered to fish out these secret ballot thingys from Gold Derby for Vice. They are quite a story of its own and show how close Bale was to winning despite his other losses. I mean in just a handful of selection, 3 out of 5 voters outrightly pick him and a third feels the need to mention him despite choosing someone else.
I feel like it is probably expected in the industry for Bale to pick a Best Actor lead any next time his undeniable perf is in a really good film.
