According to this WENN newsbite on IMDb, Bale was once offered a part in the Robin Hood film: Is Robin Hood set for a return to the big screen - with Russell Crowe playing the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham? Top screenwriters Gregg Chabot and Kevin Peterka have already pitched a role in the planned film to Christian Bale, who stars in their latest movie Reign of Fire. They also want Boogie Nights actor Philip Seymour Hoffman to play an overweight Robin in the film, which will be set 10 years after the Robin Hood story traditionally ends.Did this project have any connection with 2010's Robin Hood? The trivia section for that movie lists that Bale was once considered for the part of Robin Hood. The screenwriters for Reign of Fire are not mentioned in the credits though. Oddly, this WENN pitch idea of casting a slightly overweight Robin does seem to correspond with Crowe's ultimate casting as the lead. But the latter can more easily be explained by Ridley Scott being the director. May be that initial pitch went into the Hollywood hell hole to reemerge as a Ridley Scott project. Whatever the case, it's certainly one of the better bullets for Bale to dodge.

EDIT to a previously posted mistaken version: Was Bale trying to bag the Batman role even before Nolan? Bale seemed to have sign up for the Batman role in a Batman vs Superman project by direct Wolfgang Peterson (Air Force One). It was put on hold due to Peterson's involvement in Troy (2004) and a Superman solo was instead to be developed first. This loss sure turned out to be Bale's gain! The Batman vs Superman project must have been abandoned for good after the critical disappointment with Superman Returns and the success of Nolan's Batman take. Source: IMDb.

More on the Wolfgang Peterson's Batman vs. Superman--- what happened: That film that’s coming out in two years? We almost saw a version of it ten years ago. While Warner Bros. was busy developing several projects to get their heroes back on the screen, Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker came in and pitched the idea of a “Batman vs. Superman” film (this of course would become the root of the joke that he wrote the “Aquaman” movie in HBO’s “Entourage”). Legendary director Wolfgang Petersen signed on to direct the film with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman jumping on to give a second pass at the script.
The film was said to involve a world where Batman’s closest friends (Dick Grayson, Commissioner Gordon, and Alfred) are all dead and the Batman just isn’t what he used to be while over in Metropolis, Superman is going through his own crisis following a divorce from Lois Lane. Batman finds solace in a new love interest who is killed by the Joker and for one reason or another blames Superman, thus the pair come to blows. As one can imagine, the climax of the film would have seen the pair realize their fighting was silly and was all staged by the hands of Lex Luthor, whom they team up to take down.
“It is a clash of the titans,” Petersen told Variety in 2002. “They play off of each other so perfectly. (Superman) is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama.”
The film lingered in development with rumors pointing toward Colin Farrell and future Batman Christian Bale as being contenders for the Dark Knight, with Farrell said to be the chosen one. AICN reported that Jude Law was going to take on the Man of Steel for the film but pulled out at the last minute and would be replaced by none other than Josh Hartnett. Production was slated to begin in early 2003 for five to six months with a summer 2004 release date eye, but eventually the studio got cold feet and decided to reboot the franchises with the characters in their own respective movies first.
In 2006, Petersen actually opened up to us here at SuperHeroHype about the film, saying at the time he was still very much interested in the idea.
“I still think that the Superman/Batman clash, putting them together in one film, would be absolutely fantastic,” said Petersen. “I hope it still will happen because they are so different as we know. The dark Batman and the sort of goody goody Superman. It’s so nice to play with both and see how the dynamic between the two also including fighting between the two how that would work.”www.superherohype.com/features/305969-11-more-superhero-movies-that-almost-happened/11

This article on Escobar's life and the attempts to Hollywoodize him briefly mentions in passing this of that project Bale was once attached to: If Escobar’s story had all the elements moviegoers have long adored, it nonetheless got stuck in the Hollywood system. Mr. Yari’s first attempt fell apart when his-hoped for star (Tom Cruise) and director (Mr. Carnahan) had a falling out. But Mr. Yari and his partners recently acquired turn-around rights, and set out to make the film with Christian Bale and Javier Bardem in lead roles, for distribution by the Yari Film Group.

That's a cool video, but I was sure Bale turned down A Star is Born rather than "lost out."

That's a cool video, but I was sure Bale turned down A Star is Born rather than "lost out." Back in the day, Clint Eastwood wanted him opposite Beyonce but for some reason the project fell through. Yes, he certainly didn't Lose out.

This ScreenRant listicle write-up mentions Matt Damon's role in Syriana as having been offered to Bale first by Stephen Gaghan (director of the movie) but he passed on due to scheduling conflict with The New World: screenrant.com/christian-bale-movies-roles-characters-turned-down/I tried searching up on Google but couldn't come up with anything. EDIT: Turns out it is mentioned in the Trivia for Syriana on IMDb! If there's anything else about this out there, I'll update.
