According to a WENN news item on IMDb, Bale was linked to play Anakin Skywater. Isn't that the role that went to Hayden Christensen? Do we have more details on how did that happen? Did Bale audition? Did he turn the role down, or what? His love for Star Wars is well-known.

Using the dated web search feature at Google, I just discovered this piece from the Guardian: Christian Bale remains enigmatic on Star Wars rumour
American Psycho star Christian Bale is the latest young actor to come down with a case of Star Wars speculitis, as rumours sweep the web that the 26 year-old Brit is George Lucas's first choice to play the role of Anakin Skywalker. If the whispers are proved correct, Bale would play the adult Anakin in two pictures that chart the young man's metamorphosis from upstanding Jedi wannabe to wicked, black-clad Darth Vader. The first of these films is due to start production later this year.
But that's a mighty big "if". Cynics could claim that every middlingly talented, passably handsome actor under thirty has been tipped for the Anakin role at some stage or other over the past six months of fevered speculation. Back at the start of the year, Leonardo DiCaprio looked to be in pole position, only to exclude himself from the running last month due to prior commitments. Others currently in the frame, if insider gossip is to be believed, include American Beauty star Wes Bentley and not one but two stars of the TV show Dawson's Creek (James Van Der Beek and Joshua Jackson).
Yet in promoting American Psycho, Bale has admitted that he is close to signing up to a project that he is forbidden from discussing. Asked directly about the Star Wars film by the London Free Press, his response was teasingly vague. "You wouldn't have heard that from me," Bale is reported as saying. "My lips are sealed."
Inevitably, Bale may merely be playing games with prying journalists. But if not, his shroud of secrecy is well in keeping with the working methods of Lucas, a man determined to prevent Star Wars news from leaking out to the great unwashed. When Ewan McGregor signed up to play the young Obi Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, he was banned from even telling his wife.
