That's sad but it's the type of film that should not be rushed. I think it can only succeed with only the kind of flavorful and slightly heightened world-building we've seen in John Wick. I don't, of course, mean that it should share the same flavor, but rather the same approach: go all in with McGee's salt and sand world.

They must have been well into pre-production when it got stalled:

Here you go: Kim Masters:...I can't remember the last thing you had done before. James Mangold: It was The Wolverine with him, and then I was prepping and making The Deep Blue Good-by, the Travis McGee movie with Christian Bale, and I was actually about 13 days from shooting... KM: This is a heartbreak story. JM: ...yeah... when Christian tore his ACL, and, you know, we were in Puerto Rico, we had sets built, we were fully cast, and rehearsing, and the movie collapsed. KM: Why would they not just re-cast that lead? JM: You have to, first of all, to get your insurance money, you have to try. But the problem was, when you're that close to starting, finding a commensurate actor to jump into a movie without delaying the movie for months and incurring you even more expenses, becomes a real big challenge. Also, I think that you could say that there were folks at Fox that may-- when you're making a movie that is risky, and someone gives you a get-out-of-jail-free card and says 'you can step off this right now and come away dollar for dollar like you never lost anything' I think that's also-- By the way, the movie might still happen. So it's not like Fox was that nervous, they're still hoping I make it. But at that moment, with kind of the bottom falling out of the movie, and knowing they could get out, I think that was the easiest thing to do, and say 'we regroup and try another time.' KM: So is there a part of you that was like 'Oh my god, so now I gotta go back and do Wolverine' or did you think yeee-- JM: Yes, absolutely. You kind of go 'ohhh... that was a real movie, and now I'm kind of plunged back into franchise world.' I think in a way that worked for Logan. I came back with a similar sense of ambivalence like you, and I really was not excited about playing from the Bible, as it were, with the movie, and I think I was creatively frustrated in the sense that I had kind of been denied the chance to make a movie more in my normal bailiwick, just a straight dramatic film for adults. And I came back to this kind of hellbent to try and push through a similar-toned film.

Wow Tuulia, way to go! I didn't expect this to be so quick. Thanks a ton! Now, since you seem to be fond of transcribing in general, could we ask you to transcribe a few more things posted on the blog? I will direct you to the specific posts via message if you agree.

Yeah I kinda like it. I'm ridiculously slow at it, and also it's a foreign language and all, but I like to try... I mean... in the thing above I needed to consult google translate to figure out two words (not the meaning, that was clear enough from the context, but to make sure I had the spelling right) - but yay, I learned two new words! (Also, it was a nice listen all the way through, respect to Mangold.) I can't promise anything, but you're welcome to send transcription requests via PM.

Wow, that's even more wonderful of you on retrospect. On the other hand, this is an excellent way to increase command of this foreign language. It's my second language too.

Oh yes, using the language is the best way to learn more. I even (over-ambitiously) tried reading books in Spanish some years ago, but that didn't work since my Spanish is just too bad. It's different with English, it doesn't really feel like a 'foreign' language, it's so familiar, and I use it all the time anyway (listening, reading and writing, but unfortunately rarely speaking). Learning new words is more common when reading, but I guess I got lucky with Mangold, who also speaks clearly, so figuring out likely spelling of the words wasn't hard. And by the way, I think 'bailiwick' is such an interesting word.

nothing new here but i'll post this anyway. according to dennis lehane this project is not happening. if mangold and bale do end up collaborating for a third time i hope they do the force instead of this. it sounds like it would make for a much better film.
