Josh Lucas
I don't consider myself a wildly method actor by any means, but I think that the way I handle myself on set oftentimes confuses the character and vice versa, so that if the character... I do think they go hand in hand. And the actors I've worked with who I oftentimes have the most... not respect for, but the most similarity in terms of working style is that they come with the bit of the character with them at all times. There's some, I think, mythology in terms of actors being so in character that they... if they're playing a bad person then therefore they're a bad person on set, and I oftentimes find that those kind of actors don't really interest me.
But, like we're gonna talk about in a minute, I've worked with Christian Bale twice now. I worked with him on American Psycho, which is as difficult a character that you could possibly do, and he was absolutely lovely, genuinely, and yet he was to an extent in character. I then just worked with him again on a movie, and it was similar, where he was deeply in character, but he was always totally kind, and present in the subtle little moments in between. So that I find more interesting than somebody who's, like, "oh, because I'm playing a nasty character, I'm gonna be nasty all the time." I think those actors exist, by the way, some of them are deeply talented at doing that, but it makes life difficult for a lot of people.

www.gq.com/story/brad-pitt-cover-profile-october-2019Brad Pitt"\: “Well, it's about bringing my personal experience, my personal humor, my personal, um, embarrassments, and my personal pains. When I watch [Christian] Bale or [Tom] Hardy, I can't do what they do. I love watching them. And I couldn't step into that role.” But: “I want to do the same thing on my end.” EDITED: To add quote and reflect the original source of the interview.

Well... let's hope Assayas puts some money where his mouth is and persuades Bale to be a part of his next project! God knows Bale needs to BROADEN his directors roster, man...

James Mangold at the time of release of 3:10 to Yuma: ew.com/article/2007/08/31/spotlight-christian-bale/"[T]here can be no doubt that Bale’s recent career trajectory has been both skyward and steep. ”I use the word undeniable,” says Yuma director James Mangold. ”Sometimes people will talk about how someone ‘broke out.’ But, in Christian’s case, you can take away any movie and still the body of work is so good that, to me, he becomes undeniable. He makes decisions from his gut, not his head. I think it’s true that he does things as much for the adventure as anything else.” -- "Still, certain young stars of today could stand to learn from the Welsh-born actor about being known for their work rather than their private life. ”There’s a kind of performer who is more about selling their persona, their brand,” says Mangold. ”That’s certainly not what Christian’s about.” Awesome to see that even so early in his career award-winning directors regarded him so highly!

Nolan's thoughts on Bale's American Psycho performance, from an original Empire write up on Batman Begins: Of course it was very much in my mind,” confirms Nolan. “I was blown away by that performance. There was this very edgy, very dangerous set of thoughts going on behind Patrick Bateman’s eyes." www.empireonline.com/movies/features/batman-begins-2/
