Whoa! I had no idea! Back in May 2010, John Hillcoat was prepping The Revenant and chasing Bale for Hugh Glass (Leo's Oscar winning role!) who was seriously considering the role! www.empireonline.com/movies/news/christian-bale-ready-revenant/I'm def gonna follow this up, find out what happened, and how this fell apart. Meantime, fun bit from Empire's write-up on the news: "We’ll keep our fingers crossed that everything works out this time. But Christian, if you do finally sign on, please realise that you don’t have to actually get attacked by a bear in preparation for the role. But if you do, please stick it on YouTube..."

Even though bale is much more appropriate for the role hugh glass as a tough frontiersman than dicaprio. I don't think he could emote as well as dicaprio in moments of vulnerability in the movie and also the scope and epic scale of the movie would never be possible with bale as 135 million $ budget is impossible with bale as the star.

While I absolutely agree about movie budgeting, I have to disagree completely with your point on emoting. Bale would have appeared like an actual man going through all of that, emotions and all, DiCaprio was a very good DiCaprio but still very much DiCaprio in that role. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is literally the first time where I believed DiCaprio as a thespian rather than a star.
