From an old TV GUIDE blurb, 2002, via christianbale.livejournal.com/2002/07/01/: From the TV GUIDE Insider...
For years, we've heard buzz of professional rivalry between Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio. Recall that Bale nearly lost American Psycho to DiCaprio, until the Titanic star passed on playing serial killer Patrick Bateman. More recent gossip had Leo up for Bale's leading part in this year's sci-fi thriller Equilibrium. Are these actors at war?
"To be honest, it's pushing it a little bit to say we're in competition for roles," Bale chuckles to TV Guide Online. "I have to accept the fact that [DiCaprio] has a vast choice compared to me. Absolutely, he does. I have no 'competition' with him on that level whatsoever. "He was interested in American Psycho," Bale acknowledges. "Well, you know what? He's a smart guy. He should be; it's a great script. But that's where it ends. I've met him a couple of times — we got on just fine. We almost worked together! I would love to say that we're in competition constantly, but I think he's a little bit more in demand."

This is an old E! Online interview (c. 2003) accessed via the way-back machine. Since it consists entirely of personal information, I'm sharing it here: web-beta.archive.org/web/20030611042747/http://www.eonline.com/Features/Live/Bale/Qa/index3.htmlI notice you keep touching your wedding ring. So, at least share one fun thing about being married.
The whole marriage thing I actually consider fun. It's surprised me, but I enjoy saying "my wife." I made a guy apologize to her the other night because he was rude. After saying, "You, apologize to my wife," I couldn't stop laughing because it felt great to say it.
After a tough day on the set, I guess it must be nice to be able to come home to your wife and escape the pressure.
Absolutely. That's an essential thing, and that's also why I really try to make sure there is a dividing line between the work I do and my personal life--you know, going home at night and not letting your work follow you.
You're not known for playing the Hollywood fame game. What's kept you on the sidelines?
When I first came to Los Angeles and made a movie, I was 17 years old, and it was all new to me. Suddenly, "Oh wow!" Here were these people taking me out to clubs and bars and pointing out actors and celebrities. It was fascinating, and I found it hilarious. I never really lost myself, but I did see that I could suffer from extreme overconfidence just like everybody else in that scene. It can actually kill your enjoyment of the real craft of acting. I'm not being scathing about going out to parties and clubs, but when it becomes a serious thing of being seen at places, then it's not fun anymore. But I've been as much of a brat as anybody. I think it is probably something you have to go through to realize why you hate it.
Can't keep the girls away, though. Do your fans behave, or do they hit on you?
I'll give you two extremes. I was at the L.A. Marathon recently, and some woman leaned over and started stroking my neck. This clammy hand came out of nowhere as she was saying, "I really like your work." It made me want to vomit. I don't know what the hell she was thinking. The other time was when I was a lot younger. I was sitting in a caf with some friends, and we started talking to these two girls. One of them started telling us about her boyfriend, who [she said] was Christian Bale. We started asking questions about him, and eventually, one of my friends couldn't hold it in any longer and just got hysterical. He said, "You idiot, this is Christian Bale sitting right across from you." The girl was so mortified she went rushing out of the restaurant.
After all the time you've spent in L.A. recently, what part of you is still British?
I love rain. Actually, I think most British people hate rain, but I actually love it. I like tea. I drink to projectile vomit, and that's probably an English trait.
What do you do when you aren't filming?
I don't really have hobbies. I like to dirt-bike. I have a motocross bike, and I love doing that. But, you know, otherwise I just make faces at myself in the mirror, really. More faces in the mirror.

Bale reveals how they celebrate Christmas: Christian Bale: We celebrate two Christmases. We have Serbian (his wife Sibi is of Serbian heritage) Christmas [on Jan. 7] and I have Dec. 25. Anything we missed on Dec. 25 we have on Jan. 7. I am working on a film right now that we will be finishing right before Christmas, so that will be a fantastic break, release and relief. I’ll be getting back to my family, then we will figure out what to do. Sometimes, when you’re traveling a lot, you just really want to be at home and have friends around, so we will see. We are commitment-phobic, so we leave everything to the last second. I always make my daughter’s great uncle run around in a Santa Claus outfit, but I’m worried he’s going to have a heart attack lately because she catches him (laughs). He has to run harder recently. But he looks better in the Santa outfit. She would rumble me if I was the one running around. She would know clearly it’s daddy. I am not a panic shopper, but I love shopping at the last minute. In London, I would always be out on Christmas eve shopping around until the last minute, and that’s always fun to me. It’s not the same here (in LA), because it’s not cold. You are not running down Oxford Street with 20,000 people trying to do the same thing. You see what you can get. You come back with astronaut costumes for your nieces and they’re like, “Why did you get me that?” Because it seemed like a good idea at the time. What is the worst gift I have ever gotten? It’s not the worst gift that you have ever gotten—it’s the gift that you didn’t get. As a kid, I remember running downstairs, and I would always think I would get a BMX (bike) because I knew some other guys had gotten a BMX. I thought it’s going to be there, but it wasn’t there. But now, thankfully, I have Serbian Christmas in January, so you can go, “I really wanted a BMX. Can that happen on Jan. 7?” So, it’s a great fallback. And the best gift—nowadays, it really is just being on holiday with the family. That’s the best thing, when you can just turn off your phone and not look at the computer and, well, you can’t sleep in when you have little kids. But just forget about everything—and that is the best! entertainment.inquirer.net/186079/channing-tatum-sam-smith-other-stars-disclose-their-christmas-plans

CB on his attitudes to family and relationship with then baby daughter, in 2007: ew.com/article/2007/08/31/spotlight-christian-bale/”I have a whole different set of principles and ethics when it comes to my daughter, which is just far more cutthroat than my own personal ones,” he muses, suddenly sounding very Patrick Bateman-ish. ”It’s this animal nature that comes out in you — which is actually a fantastic feeling!” So, will these principles give Bale pause next time Werner Herzog invites him on a far-flung cinematic adventure? ”No, because my daughter was 6 months and with me in the jungles of Thailand,” he explains. ”In fact, I enjoy it more knowing that I’m gonna have my daughter along to experience these adventures as well. Because the worst thing in the world to be is a boring example to a child.”

What a delightful article from last year. Bale reveals Sibi loves hims as some of his characters, even The Machinist's Trevor Reznik. He also relates what happens after he has just done with a role, what carries over, and how difficult he finds to readopt a new set of traits for the next role! Fascinating stuff!! people.com/movies/christian-bale-jokes-wife-prefers-his-characters-to-him/
