Quotes from the Hollywood Reporter review* of Velvet Goldmine via IMDb: *Fun Fact: This review is the first IMDb news item for Christian Bale, the only one in his news archive for 1998. The article is quoted on full without a link. I tried searching for the original source but found none on THR website. There is no blurb from THR on Rotten Tomatoes either. I'm guessing they somehow deleted that page (may be in a website makeover or something). - There's nothing safe about Todd Haynes' ambitious, sensual and nostalgic musical romance "Velvet Goldmine", which divided critics at Cannes but won the filmmaker a special prize from the jury for best artistic contribution.
- Haynes freely admits that "Citizen Kane" is the inspiration for the film's complex structure and occasional razzle-dazzle sequences. Indeed, Orson Welles' 1941 masterpiece is visually referenced in several scenes and individual shots...
- While the grand design of the film will not work for all viewers, there are too many standout moments to call the work a disappointment.
- Rhys Myers and McGregor blaze across the screen with great fury in fabulous makeup and costumes, while Collette is a crucial presence in the two-hour film's winding second half. These three, along with Bale to a lesser degree, transform from bright creatures of the night to fallen angels, with an ironic twist at the end that underscores the eerily totalitarian "present day" setting in 1984.

This Janet Maslin New York Times review reads quite enthusiastic! - Todd Haynes's dazzlingly surreal ''Velvet Goldmine'' offers a celestial ''Here's looking at you, kid'' to the heyday of British glitter rock in general and to the David Bowie of the early 1970's in particular. Without addressing Mr. Bowie directly, it appropriates his shimmering, protean aura in virtuoso ways that put ordinary period filmmaking or time-capsule musicology to shame.
- The astounding Mr. Haynes... brilliantly reimagines the glam-rock 70's as a brave new world of electrifying theatricality and sexual possibility, to the point where identifying precise figures in this neo-psychedelic landscape is almost beside the point. ''Velvet Goldmine'' tells a story the way operas do: blazing with exquisite yet abstract passions, and with quite a lot to look at on the side._____________________ There is no particular word on the performances.

An essay with Todd Haynes' comments on his fascination with glam rock, comparing what glam stood for with Oscar Wilde, and politics of identity.
