Quotes from THR review at IMDb: - A literary-minded feature about growing up sexually and struggling to find contentment in 1960s-70s England, "Metroland" is only fitfully interesting...
- ... [It] is built around a hoary conflict between selling out and thumbing one's nose at the establishment, with commuter trains providing the symbol of either escaping or settling into a middle-class routine.
- Many scenes are engaging with the leads immersed in their roles, but the overall scheme grows tiresomely repetitive.
- Bale is well-cast and Watson plays a fairly ordinary character for a change, while Zylberstein lights up the screen.______________________________ The words "Bale is well-cast" are so revealing. By Bale's and really any standards, Chris is a 'fairly ordinary character'. I remember an interview from around that time in which Bale mentioned getting fed up with coming in roles and going all in for American Psycho (the same would happen a few years later for The Machinist after a string of so-so studio films).

This last paragraph from the Janet Maslin review at NYtimes really sums everything up nicely: ''Metroland,'' directed by Philip Saville and adapted by Adrian Hodge, does seem plausible as a cri de coeur from a trapped young husband and father. But its affectations are more galling than Gallic most of the time. (Though Ms. Zylberstein is a Frenchwoman, she plays such a stereotype that she seems to be impersonating one.) Its strongest assets, aside from a performance by Ms. Watson that pierces through the nonsense, are Mark Knopfler's fine, expressive score and the attractiveness of its star. Mr. Bale is a babe, as the film's characters make a point of mentioning. (Annick calls Chris ''a beautiful English boyfriend.'') And the story often has him leaping into bed quite often, in search of bohemian thrills.
______________________ For those who have never watched this film, you should totally give it a try. It's nice, cute and yes, they are right, Bale is a total babe in this!
