"Could someone translate what chalamet said, please !!
"
So I tried tried to transcribe it.
This is at least roughly the discussion starting @4:16
TC: ...Anyhow, so, when I got to LaGuardia that was really... There I saw that acting is to be taken seriously, and not self-seriously, not to a pretentious or pushing-other-people-away degree, but rather just the harder you work at it, the better you'll be at it, and... I got to see
Hostiles last night for the first time and it was a surreal experience, because I got to watch Christian Bale work for a month and a half and see how he went about it, and watching that film last night... He gives such a powerful performance that's so restrained, he doesn't falsely reach for anything once, so...
DP: But he can go big when he wants to. -- That's an incredibly restrained performance...
TC: In
Hostiles?
DP: ...that drives that film, yeah. But sometimes he's just funny and silly.
TC: Yeah, I mean,
American Psycho... When we were on set I asked him one day, because we had three minutes before set-up, so I said
American Psycho is one of my favorite movies, and I said "Who's idea was that?" And he said "Who's idea was what?" And I was like, "Who's idea was it to do the, like, the thing?" And he was like "What are you talking about?" And I was like, "You know..." and then I think I phrased it like "There's a performative quality to your performance in that movie that I've not seen in any of your other films, and I'm curious if that was the director that led you in that direction." And then he had a really fascinating response. It included a story of linking with the director in New York, and having a meeting, and sitting down and saying "I think this is a comedy. I think it's a really dark comedy, but I think the tone of this is weirdly comedic," and she agreed, and.... But it's weird because everyone in that movie buys into what's going on... Sorry, I'm not here to talk about...
DP: That's okay.
TC: ...
American Psycho, but you said just to make it like a conversation, so...
...and then @19:22
DP: When Christian came on, I still gets comments about Christian's accent, they're awestruck that he's British.
TC: Oh you did this with Christian?
DP: Yeah.
TC: I gotta go back and watch that.
DP: And Christian is great. He was very thoughtful about acting and about what he does, and what's important and what's not, and very nice and happy and everything else, and people are like, oh he's not moody? Like they're shocked sometimes.
They're both such fans.
(Btw, Chalamet also mentioned loving
The Big Short. And being cast for
Hostiles just a couple of weeks before going there.)
Apologies for the delay in getting to it, and I hope that transcription was helpful.
