From Eric Kohn's Indiewire review: www.indiewire.com/2018/12/vice-review-christian-bale-dick-cheney-1202027625/On the film/direction: [The film] offers a smart and detailed overview of Cheney’s elaborate ruse to exploit the country’s highest authority, but undercuts its authority with crass and often clunky humor that overstates the nature of Cheney’s villainy. Lame jokes just get in the way when the bad guys are hiding in plain sight. - ... fascinating consolidation of two modes. On the one hand, it’s a shrewd and pointed overview of Cheney’s rise ... the plot unfolds with the density of a muckraking journalistic expose, arbitrarily interrupted by pages from MAD Magazine. - Vice,” in its rambunctious and unfocused manner, takes some ludicrous risks to make cogent points about Cheney’s malicious intent — and how he put his plans into action. The movie doesn’t touch the Trump era, nor does it need to bother. If nothing else, McKay delivers a reasonable argument for how much worse Cheney was for America, particularly because most of the country didn’t notice. - On Bale: Bale has a tendency to showboat, but the specifics of the Cheney role require such a dramatic transformation that he can’t miss a beat; he’s so believable that many scenes inhabit an eerie, documentary-like authenticity, at least until the next joke. -

A very encouraging review by Deadline's Pete Hammond. deadline.com/video/vice-review-christian-bale-amy-adams-dick-cheney-adam-mckay-political-satire/‘Vice’ Review: Christian Bale Brilliantly Channels Dick Cheney In Adam McKay’s Scathing Political Satire On film: Indeed Vice follows the trail but none of the rules in painting a scathing portrait of a man driven for power and finding it on his own terms. Vice shows us how Cheney created the blueprint for the political environment we are living through now ... - ... he does so with at times wonderfully comic and unconventional methods. - ... while many will come away horrified at what Cheney did ... this is at times a generous look at the man who would be king, depending on how you want to see it - This kind of smart, sharp, relevant, funny, and urgent filmmaking is increasingly rare these days. McKay should be applauded for keeping a great tradition alive. -

From Peter Bradshaw's 4-star review for the Guardian: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/film/2018/dec/17/vice-review-christian-bale-dick-cheney-biopicOn film: McKay’s wacky structural alienation-effects and meta gags are more pertinent here, and the dialogue is far more smoothly managed: there is a nice fantasy scene in which Cheney and his formidable wife Lynne (played by Amy Adams) switch into Shakespearean dialogue, as a comment on the laconic, tongue-tied nature of real life. On Bale: Basically, it’s a better film than The Big Short because of a big, enjoyable, intelligent central performance in which Bale has the sense to do more with less.

Has anyone seen the video of Gary Oldman presenting the SAG and someone shouting Gary Oldman after Oldman said and the winner is? It’s 100% Bale and absolutely hilarious.
Are we seeing a new Bale who is more comfortable with press and public appearances? The variety podcast with Rockwell was brilliant and he shared a lot about his family and childhood and he has been the most entertaining thing about awards season.
